My favorite quotes

There is something about certain quotes. They can crystalize the human experience, concepts and ideas in a compact way that gives the reader an immediate intuition and grasp of the conveyed. This is a list of some of my most favorite quotes that I have stumbled across over the years.

"(Life) It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury and signifying nothing."
- Macbeth

This single phrase summarizes the subjective human experience like few others I have encountered.

"He who opens a school door closes a prison."
- Victor Hugo

Opening the door of knowledge and understanding brushes away mental cloudiness, ignorance and misunderstanding and so many aspects of human nature which lead to suffering in this world. Hugo's metaphor of the prison always seems so apt to me.

"If we cannot smile, we cannot help other people to smile."
- Thich Nhat Hanh

When I'm going through tough times these words help remind me that spreading joy is what I want to achieve.

"Death is necessary and cannot be avoided. I mean, where am I going to go to get away from it?"
- Epictetus

The acknowledgement of death and its inevitability in simultaneously a serious and humorous way is what makes me fond of this quip.
